Description

Now here is a piece of equpiment you don't see every day. A short while back, the Union Pacific RR did some hefty trackwork to the main through my town. The mission: to replace the old wooden railroad ties with new concrete ones. This piece of equipment is what does the job. It is called a Track Renewal Train, owned and operated by Harsco Track Technologies. The train is about 6 units long attached to a train of flat cars containing fresh concrete ties. As the train creeps over the track, it lifts and seperates the rails off the ties, replacesthe wooden ties with concrete ones, and replaces new rail on top. It is one of the most amazing things to watch in person. And it only costs the Union Pacific RR $100,000 per day to rent it. The units visible are part of the rail relaying unit, which also contains the hydroulics for the train, a flatcar with containers that hold an office, tool room, and mechanical room, and bringing up the rear of the train is an ex Amtrak GE M80 series locomotive. The locomotive isn't used for any kind of tractive effort, but used merely for its genertators and such to power the equipment on the train.

Anyway, I know the photo isn't the best, but this is such an interesting piece of machinery, I had to share.

This machine was used to rehab the track now used by TriMet's commuter rail system in the Portland suburbs.
